March is National Social Work Month! The Canadian Association of Social Workers' (CASW) theme for 2025 highlights the vast and diverse impact of the social work profession, reaching into every corner of our communities to create meaningful change and support individuals, families, and groups.

At Acorn Family Place, we know that social work has a deeply impactful history and presence on Turtle Island and in the lives of families in our community. The impact of social work both historically and at present has contributed to, and directly caused, harm to Indigenous families through its role in colonization, residential schools, the 60's scoop and the child welfare system.

In 2019, the CASW released an Statement of Apology and Commitment to Reconciliation. In 2024, they released an updated Code of Ethics that outlines the ethical approaches that Social Workers are accountable for, including upholding the values and principles of reconciliation, and rights of Indigenous families.

Acorn Family Place embraces the values of Truth and Reconciliation, and Equity, Justice and Anti-Racism in all that we do, and joins the CASW calls to government and community alike for a full implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commision's Calls to Action and the National Inquiry into MMIWG "Reclaiming Power and Place" Calls for Justice.

Programs at Acorn Family Place, such as WrapAround and Access Program aim to provide holistic, trauma-informed and community-based ways for families involved with the child welfare system to honour their connections and work towards their goals. We are fortunate to have three staff members working in the Social Work profession take leadership in programs like these at our family resource centre.
